Fides was the Roman goddess of trust, honesty, and good faith—one of the oldest deities, representing one of the seven cardinal virtues. Her name lives on today as "fidelity."
In ancient Rome, the temple of Fides safeguarded bronze tablets inscribed with laws and treaties. When Romans made contracts, they shook hands in her name, invoking her blessing of trust and good faith into their relationship.
